Notes:

1. Elizabeth's death certificate states her age at 83. Either her age was exaggerated, or she may have been born a few years before her baptism. She is the 4th daughter and 5th child of Richard and Hannah Norris.

2. In the 1851 census Elizabeth Burchell, 52, widow, was described as a pauper charwoman living in Pulborough with her children Jane, Morris and Elizabeth.

3. In the 1861 census Elizabeth's children Maurice Burchell and Elizabeth Burchell were living in the hamlet of Rackham, Amberly, with Elizabeth Giles, 64, and her husband Edward Giles, 67, an agricultural labourer born in Pulborough. There is no marriage record, but we presume she became his common law wife and took his name.

4. In the 1871 census Elizabeth Giles was a 75 year old widow and housekeeper, living at 12 Freehold Terrace in Preston near Brighton.
